1. Album: In It For The Money
    Artist: Supergrass

I have a feeling this album will divide readers of this column.  The English will know (and almost certainly love) it, the rest of the world… I’m not so sure.  After the commercial success at the height of Britpop with Alright, Mansize Rooster & Caught By The Fuzz (probably the best Tracks 2,3 and 4 on any album in 1995?), Gaz and the lads took a step back and didn’t just deliver another round of the same.  They stepped up the intensity, stepped up the craftsmanship and stepped up the pace.  The slow, organ-led build to the title track would be one of 1997’s best intros if OK Computer hadn’t existed, the crunching guitars of Richard III some of the best headbanger material for kids too naive to headbang (read: your humble writer) and yet still contained classically Supergrass-esque fun track in Going Out.  In It For The Fun.
