Finally, we get to feature a true Berlin band, not just those who have decamped to the city for its salubrious ease and inspiring recording environment. That band is Fenster. Who, of course, being a true Berlin band aren’t all actually from Berlin but that just makes them all the more authentically Berliner. Right? Anyway, to the music.
Fenster play a brand of lo-fi pop music so diverse and eclectic that it is almost chameleonic in nature. Switching vocalists and instruments throughout a live show and equally during each song and using everything within reach to sum up to an unusual and ever-inventive sound. It’s melodic whilst languorous, warm whilst sharp. It’s difficult to pin down but at the same time it’s reassuringly recognisable. The influences in their music are clear but they re-interpret those and create a “macabre data sweetness” (according to their record label).
Whether or not they can help to inspire a long-desired Berlin scene around indie rock remains to be seen but they’re certainly setting a worth flag mast.
