1. Album: Love This Giant
Artist: David Byrne & St Vincent

Of all the stellar releases coming out this week and the last, this collaboration between David Byrne, one of the most influential musicians from the last thirty years, and St Vincent, one of the most interesting and innovative working today, is the one I’ve been looking forward to the most.  Given they are both, in their own way, guitar-led maestros, it’s interesting to hear that Love This Giant is propelled mostly via a funky horn section.  This is nothing Byrne hasn’t played with before (think Rei Momo or The Knee Plays) but the temptation to let rip via guitar must’ve been suppressed quite a bit.

Overall, it seems like quite a curious album, one that tries to approach the listener in different ways and surprise.  Despite the fact that it was concocted over two years in the studio together, there are songs that are definitely led by one or the other artist rather than it being a clear collaboration at all times but when they do come together it works nicely.  It’s smart, avant-garde and a fascinating record - I’ll certainly be spending a lot more time with it.
